Offering leasing can be a good way to sell more Teslas as the initial cost is quite high even if the running cost is low. But I'm waiting for their planned family car, or a smaller Volvo C30 BEV. The Tesla is a wonderful creation but it's still too expensive (we don't have tax rebates on electric cars).

Tesla is the only reason that Nissan and Ford get to vamp up EV production, and they got pennies compared to the rest. They were the original designers - I remember seeing them unveiled in the Guggenheim and reading about their production triumphs along the way... they had waiting lists three-years long because people appreciated that they are truly the most INNOVATIVE car company on the market today. Not to mention they are beautiful to look at. The only reason that they are so expensive is because they don't have economies of scale yet, and until recently have been vastly on their own. Finally they are starting to get some attention and government handouts, but at a cost of selling their groundbreaking EV component to other car companies, only so that they can back-engineer it and undercut Tesla. You watch. It's big-company/government croniesm once again and the big loser will most likely be the company that had the dream to make an electric car work while the unions were playing hop-scotch.

The whole thing is dependant on battery technology not getting better too fast, and imposing a standard enabling them to make you pay for what you could have for free (charging with your own solar panels, windmills etc). Spread the word!

Beware of Better Place.

Trying to replace one oil monopoly with another held by a small group of investors ... All the big greedy investors are lining up to make sure you won't be able to charge your EV at home on your own solar panels, but to CHARGE you per 'emile'.

Oh boy, they're not going to kill the electric car this time... They're going to make sure they control it properly.

With some luck battery improvement will arrive before this evil scam can take hold... But once the charging stations are in place, it will be too late.
The swapping stations are just a diversion, the idea is to get control over the way people charge anywhere, be it at home or on the road.

We've had this technology for years and it has been squashed. There is no reason why an electric vehicle should cost $100K!

I am glad to see it has come full circle, but think how far we could have come had we not had to reinvent the wheel.

I just watched (for the second time) "Who killed the electric car" the other day and am still amazed (although I guess I shouldn't be) at the way things went down for the electric car the last time around.

Is it safe to assume that the Leaf will be available in Canada around the same time that it shows up in the US?

I'm really looking forward to electric cars coming back and hopefully staying around this time.

To: Greg Shea

Keep your eye on BYD. They have promised to begin marketing an electric car by the end of March in China with the following characteristics: five passengers, range 250 miles, 50% recharge in ten minutes (at recharge station, otherwise slower with home recharge). This is a large, well financed company in China.

Sun power is practical today. It will get cheaper in time but is cheap enough now to warrant a switch from fossil fuels. We will soon reach an "inflection point" where it will become a major industry.

Wow, how many myths can there be?
GM destroyed all but one of its EV1's. The lone survivor was disabled, and is in a California automobile museum.
It is great to know that Ovshinsky is back at. Is his company on the stock market? Where can I obtain his shingle-like solar panels?
Do people actually trust GM to come up with an electric solution?
The Volt is a very sad and weak replacement (?) for the EV1!
Thankfully, the move toward ethanol and hydrogen fuel based cars has been mercifully squelched.
Critics of electric cars claim that the need for electricity, presumably from the already taxed power grid, will not be the "green" way to go.
This, of course, is just a smoke screen to avoid facing the real issues.
We need to greatly invest in the one power source we know is almost completely untapped, infinitely large, and hugely available – SOLAR!
Instead of spending so much money pretending to try to help people in far off lands, let's get to the task of creating the technologies needed to really use the Sun's energy for the benefit of ALL people.
The recent debacle in Copenhagen certainly must be a valid indication that there is a much greater need for realistic solutions.
The Tesla is a great car, but who can actually afford one? The electric car must be functional, stylish, and, above all, affordable, if it is to make it in the market place.
What a sign of our times that, less than five years after the release of "Who Killed The Electric Car?", the major American/Canadian auto manufacturers would be in such dire straits! Where is the billionaire/philanthropist/entrepreneur who will lead the way?
Awful to suggest, but maybe the Germans had it right with the so-called "people's car". Perhaps the government (okay, so I may have some socialist leanings) should go into car production. Put the displaced auto workers to work manufacturing electric cars. (To me this makes infinite more sense than a bail out. And if recent TV ads are any indication, at least GM still doesn't get it. There are some Ford ads, but where are the Chrysler ads? Almost non-existent!) There could be a variety of forms. Let the creative engineers come up with them. We cannot afford to wait another 20 years. The hybrid would have been a good start a generation ago, but is sadly too late now.
Global warming is a reality TODAY and we need to act NOW!
Thank you.

We pay our taxes and the government continue to speand it like it is there pocket money. Yes electric cars could help the environment but how much longer after that will they tell us to get rid of our electric cars and find another way to take more money of us? Although the govenment are making the right steps to help us in the future should this problem ever have happened if they though it through before ie why didnt we just run of electricity before?

Too bad they couldn't invest the $ in manufacturing 100-200 mile range EVs with no internal combustion engine. People complain about range issues on EVs but now 40 miles is supposed to be great? More than a decade ago the RAV4-EV and EV-1s were getting 100-200 miles. I think if a comparable car was available, no one would be able to keep them in stock. We really need the patents released on the NiMH batteries tha powered these EVs currently owned by Chevron. I read about this mess in Two Cents Per Mile by electrical engineer Nevres Cefo. You can find it on Amazon.

This is SUCH good news! After watching "Who killed the electric car" just recently, it made me angry and hopeless at the same time that we would see any company be able to escape the grip of the Auto and Oil industry. I am a conservative Republican and was annoyed by a couple of things in the movie, but I think we can ALL come together on this important issue and buck the oil/auto companies for the better good of the consumer for once. This announcement has given me a small glimmer of hope that we won't be stuck playing by their rules for the rest of my life.

I was wondering about a Solar Roof for the i-Miev, I live in South Australia plenty of Sun, When Parked it could Trickle Charge the Batteries. Or may be a Wind Generator, It all help's to keep the Batteries Topped up, Or may be Travel that little bit further. We know people further out, Approx 200 to 300 kms. Would be nice too visit, With out stopping at a Motel to Charge up, For such a short Distance.

Chels, you were always too enthusiastic to be jaded by GM history like me. You know that GM cannot take technology from 0 to 60 without doing the grunt work - like Toyota did with the Prius. The Volt will never be a success and GM has assured that - just like they did with Saturn and the EV. The legacy of the old guard is too strong for GM To succeed.

I had a few negatives to bring up about the electric cars which are becoming a big thing in the motoring industry but if tom hanks likes them i guess i cannot say anything. On a serious not there must be a few down sides to electric cars plus these new cars for sale are to little to late for some people who simply cannot afford to buy a new car.

Just viewed "Who Killed the Electric Car?" and had many suspicions confirmed, namely that if for-profit industries like GM and oil companies can defeat EV technology, they will win in the near term but lose (all of us) in the long term. I'm about to retire from the Nissan plant in Tennessee that will build the LEAF EV and the lithium-ion battery plant next door. Carlos Ghosn's vision for an affordable global EV is where I'll focus my attention upon retirement.

This is no great suprise. It seems the hybrids out there getting 40 MPG are mostly a joke. I was getting 40MPG 25 years ago in my VWs. The Department of Energy is in cahoots with Big Oil and Big Automotive. The hybrids are a stalling tactic to distract us while they work towards creating a hydrogen economy wrought with bad energy transfers, lots more tax dollars and the continuation of the internal combusting engine and liquid fuels. What they don't talk about is how we had the NiMH battery (200 miles per charge) to power 100% electric cars more than 12 years ago until Chevron Oil said, "No that's our battery. You can't use it. I read about this outrage in Cefo's Two Cents Per Mile. The good news is Cefo has a good idea how we can get the technolgy back and stop beating around the bush is changing over to greener technologies.

It amazes me we are supposed to get excited about the 40 miles the Volt goes on electric power. As Chelsea knows herself all too well, the EV-1s could go well over 100 miles per charge. The Volt is still captive to the internal combustion engine and gas after 40 miles. There's a lot of parts in there and they ain't cheap. I encourage everyone to check out Two Cents Per Mile by Cefo. The book shows how Chevron essentially stole the battery technolgy used in the EV-1s and shows how we can get the technolgy back so we can go 200 miles on a charge and skip the gas tank altogether.

Now that would be something...Fast chargers, operating at 480 volts, available at public facilities, would allow drivers to charge vehicles on the go, removing the anxiety about the limited range of today’s battery-powered cars. That would help the movement.

@ Zach
If you are talking about the rarety of the Honda then i think we can agree that any groundbreaking car will be made in few numbers while the technology is perfected but as a proof of concept it is brilliant cos it fits into our lifestyle as it is now. If you have been driving your Tesla all day and then have to take a long trip in the evening, you are a bit stuffed cos you need to charge it up for at least a few hours but with a car like the Honda, you just go to the nearest gas station(when they become available. ;) ) and "recharge" it in about 2-3min. in the long run i do think fuel cell cars are the way to go. Battery cars may be a stopgap measure but not a solution. If you track the pollution that making the batteries causes from mining the raw metals and chemicals through to assembly then battery powered cars pollute more then gas powered cars do. BTW i have nothing against nuclear power plants but then us that live here in Iceland will never need them. Besides, cars dont cause global warming, the relationship between co2 and global temperature has been reversed by scientific political correctness.

Have you seen a Honda FCX Clarity driving around lately? And sixteen hours of recharge time is when the battery is COMPLETELY drained. Most would just plug their car in every night. And even if the power comes from a fossil fuel/nuclear power plant, it still puts out 1/3 of the emissions that the internal combustion engine does! Although to have true ZERO emissions, we will need to rework the entire power grid. Solar panels and wind farms left and right.

Please! You have to be joking. The Tesla is a wonderful car but it takes 16 hours to recharge it from a standard 3amp socket! Not only that but where do you think that recharge is coming from? Huge power plants and most likely from a nuclear plant. The car that makes the most sense is the new Honda FCX Clarity. It and other cars of its type are the future and the future is bright, electric and without batteries.

Now Chrysler/Fiat is deciding not to produce plug in hybrids or plug in electric vehicles???

No problem with their decision. They just need to GIVE BACK the $70 Million Dollar Grant to the Department of Energy. My next vehicle I'm going to buy will be a plug in hybrid or freeway speed electric vehicle, so I guess I will not be buying any vehicles from Chrysler/Fiat.

By the way. GM destroyed all the ev1 electric vehicles it made. You need to watch "Who killed the Electric Car" I feel, GM,Ford and all the other car makers were in cahoots with the oil companies and they are criminals and murderers of mankind and the earth.

I had the supreme privilege as a nobody to test drive the Mini EV. As an owner of a gas powered Mini - I was allowed to drive the EV on the open road and provide my opinion. After test driving one, I would enthusiastically suggest that EVERYONE drive one then buy one. I finally got the reason EV1 drivers were true fanatics of the car.

Check out the Tesla electric cars! Very cool! It seems as though ford, GM, Toyota, Etc... are coming out with new versions of thier own EV's in the next few years. We should but electric cars....from these other car makers (like Tesla) that went to work on design as the big car makers sold out to big oil. Screw em'!!!!!

Electric Mini is a perfect combination of a compact car with innovative technologies. Such cars are required to improve a present-day ecology. I like it, Really!
