First, the raw feedstock to make carbon fibers--just call it a "polacrylonitrile-based precursor"--is made in Japan by a joint venture between SGL and Mitsubishi Rayon and flown to the U.S.

The actual carbon fibers themselves are fabricated at Moses Lake, after which they're flown to Germany, where they're processed into lightweight fabrics in Wackersdorf.

At another German plant, vibramycin doxycycline, Vibramycin for cats, in Landshut, the actual carbon-fiber components for the MegaCity are made from those fabrics, doxycycline vibramycin. Vibramycin dose, After which the car itself is then built at a third German plant, in Leipzig, vibramycin medication. Vibramycin chlamydia, BMW has not commented on the carbon footprint of transporting the materials across three continents and through five plants. It has, vibramycin doxycycline hyclate, Order vibramycin, however, previously used carbon fiber in race cars as well as body and interior panels for its M Series of performance models.

BMW’s Mega City isn’t just going to be a car, it’s a whole sub-brand for BMW. There will be multiple electric cars in the Mega City line with the first one planned to be sold in mid 2013 as a 2014 model. However the car in the picture, the ActiveE concept will not appear in this line and will probably never make it to actual production. It’s going to be used by a select group of approximately 700 drivers for two years starting June 2011. It will consist of many of the components to be used in the Mega City vehicles and it’s purpose will be to field test them before they are applied to the Mega city vehicles.

I’m wondering how much the carbon footprint of the shipping of the carbonfiber still keeps the car ‘green’…

Frank: Well considering that for the cars lifetime (15 years?) there won’t be any hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, particulates or oxides of sulfur spewing from a tailpipe of the vehicle I’d say you’re stretching it a bit there worrying about how the parts get shipped.

Parts for just about every car currently manufactured get shipped from sources all around the world. It’s not the “greenest” way to do it but in this global economy it’s unrealistic to expect any different. They can’t make a car out of bamboo leaves and seashells like the professor used to on Gilligans Island you know.

Electric cars are tremendously positive for the environment compared to their ICE counterparts even if charging from the grid that uses coal for energy generation. However combining EV’s with alternative energy generation like solar or wind and the benefits are exponential. My electric cars will be powered by my solar PV array at my home. Clean, renewable energy. You can never say that about a gasoline powered vehicle.
